For over 25 years, we have been purchasing antique French mailboxes, from the early to mid-1900s and without exception, every time we would find a blue painted French mailbox, at some antique dealer, it was never for sale, only the yellow French mailboxes were available. We believe that this is a early 1900’s version and if you would like the paint restored on our antique French blue mailbox, we certainly can quote that out for you. Cast iron and steel started to be utilized in the manufacture of mail boxes in France beginning around 1900. In 1899 Léon Mougeotte, passed a law allowing the French post office to supply cast iron boxes to companies and individuals. They became so popular with the public, that they were soon called “Mougeottes” after their founder.
