This unbelievable carved bookcase, was found in the home of a retired antique dealer, who resided in a small rural French village, in the south of France. Every item in her home, showcased a woman with a great appreciation for beauty and a sophisticated taste level. Well, this bookcase is unusual to say the least and best we can figure, is that the huge deep (3” deep) carvings, were probably purchased separately and we believe that they are of Italian origin and probably date from the 1700s. There are still traces of the gold gilding showing through and most of the paint is still original. The bookcase itself, is not near as old and she may have had it made herself, from old reclaimed wood. This French, or Italian antique bookcase, probably represents the biggest wow factor (focal point, if you prefer that term?) of any piece we have ever offered. Like they say; every room needs one significant piece of furniture and this certainly fills the bill.
