Once in a great moon we get really excited about something we have never seen before, and since our first trip to France some 43 years ago, this is the only époque Louis XIV trestle table we have laid our eyes on. When a French antiques expert uses the term époque, it means that the item was constructed during the reign (or period) of, and in this case Louis XIV, rather than in the style of. Therefore it was the French expert’s (M. Jean Claude Dey* states: Epoque Louis XIV. Exceptionnelle table d’office en chêne) opinion that this dining table dates from between 1643 and 1715. The table was discovered in a castle near Bearn by the Pyrenees, and apparently as the story goes, was born there. We have left the finish as the table was found, and thought it be best for the next owner to decide how much if any restoration they would like. Design or stylistically, we have never seen a trestle that looked anything remotely similar and should anyone desire a proper copy, our old plank workshop would only be too happy to assist you. We have an extensive stock of old French lumber that we imported to choose from.
